The Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015 commenced on 1 September 2015, and the Act's enforcement provisions came into effect on 1 January 2017.

Under the Act, communications to designated public officials about policy, programmes, legislation, funding, zoning and development of land must be disclosed.

Purpose of the Act

The Act is designed to provide information to the public about:

  • Who is being lobbied
  • Who is lobbying
  • On whose behalf lobbying is being carried out
  • The issues involved in the lobbying
  • What the lobbying hopes to achieve

The Standards Commission manages the register of lobbying, ensures compliance with the Act, provides guidance and assistance, and investigates and prosecutes offences under the Act.

Some former designated public officials may be subject to post-employment restrictions under the Act.
